Poem: Eminent domain

Our children are not your eminent domain
by Stella Osorojos

The first time you came,
you told us that God had given you right to the land
under our feet, the land that had birthed us
and through us, our children.
You would improve it.

Here is what we saw:
You ripped out her forests
You emptied her skies
You poisoned her oceans
You strangled her rivers
You sickened your own people

And now that the people are sick
You come again
You have a Science given right, you say, to our bodies
to our blood vessels and our lungs,
to the codes within our cells, to our children.
You would improve it.

Our bodies are not your fields to plant with foreign crops
Our bones are not mast-pole pines for pirate ships
Our skin is not a pile of pelts for trade
Our blood is not your counting house
Our livers are not your laboratory
Our children are not your eminent domain
Our hearts are not your prisoner
